The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)

Plot of The Spy Who Dumped Me: Audrey and Morgan are best friends and are mutually supportive at all times. Hence when Audrey is dumped by her slightly older boyfriend, Drew, they decide to burn his stuff, but are persuaded by phone not to do so. When Drew returns he is shot by unknown assailants, but not before he has told Audrey to keep hold of a sport prize in the form of a small statue, and to pass it on to a man in a café in Vienna. In addition another guy, Sebastian turns up, saying he is a Brish spy working with a CIA helper, and that Drew was a CIA man. Audrey and Morgan embark on the adventure and once in Vienna get help from a friend of one of their fathers, only to find that he is another spy, so they go on the run, helped by Sebastian who may or may not be a friend. Audrey finds that the sports statue contains a pen drive which they say has been flushed down the loo, but actually Audrey has secreted it in her vagina. So the game is not over – a climax awaits (no not that sort).

Content: There is no sex or female nudity, although one of the villains turns up naked, with his dangly bits briefly on view. There is drinking but no-one is ever drunk and a bit of smoking I think. Morgan is fast talking, seeming to get them into more trouble than the more reserved Audrey. Dead bodies keep turning up, including Drew. The friends are mostly running away, once in a small car, after they had unsuccessfully attempted to steal a Jaguar with stick shift. Sebastian rescues than more than once with accurate gunfire, killing the gunmen sent to get them. They are also chased by a Russian model, gymnast and assassin who captures them intending to torture them.

A View: Is this a spoof of a spoof? Mike Myers had, after all, captured the title ‘The Spy Who Shagged Me’ in 1999. But actually the critics in the main said that they film makers had not decided what sort of film they had in mind. While it would appear to be a light comedy, actually there are a lot of killings, some of the set pieces very well presented. It looked to me as if the director was just showing her ability to present complex action on screen. So I suppose that even if it is a comedy you have to be prepared not to laugh.

Fun Fact: Although I did not recognise him Sam Heughan seemed to be very confident in his role as a spy. I did not know that he is actually the star of Outlander.
