Plot of the End of Oak Street: It is 1982. The Platt family are in trouble. Greg has lost his job and is a depressed pizza delivery man, Denise is writing a novel in which she has described a possible divorce between the main characters. But all is forgotten when they wake up to find that their children are missing, actually trying to find their dog, Starbuck, and dinosaurs are roaming the district, randomly chasing and killing people. The family are reunited but the problem of the dinosaurs persists and despite their efforts to escape they are prevented from doing so by the changed landscape. At one point what seems to be a time bubble appears, but because they are not all together they do not enter it. But this seems to be the key. If they can find another wormhole they can escape from the nightmare scenario.
Content: No sex or nudity, except for two very large dinosaurs doing it. No drinking, smoking or drug taking. The problems in the Platt family are outlined, particularly when Greg reads bits of Denise’s novel describing a divorce. She protests that it is all fiction, but nevertheless it is in her thoughts. There is some sort of a flash out in the environment and all the lights go out, indicating that the suburb has moved – or something. Then there are many scenes of dinosaurs chasing people. The pterodactyls are particularly entertaining. Some are big enough to lift adults off the ground. Starbuck, the dog, takes quite a big part, sometimes rescuing people from the predators.
A View: This outing cost a lot and it will be some time before we find out whether it has made money. It has received mainly positive reviews, although those who did not like it pointed out its various failings, particularly the difficulties of dealing with time traveI. I refer you once more to Brian and Stewie’s time adventure as an indication of what the storytellers are faced with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CII_Q2aXa-k. I admit to getting a bit fed up with the multiple chases as the dinos outpace and usually kill the residents of Oak Street, all presented as a crisis which will heal the rifts in the Platt family. But hey, we are desperate for some entertainment and this film fits the bill.
Fun Fact: We were very taken with the dog, for some reason called Starbuck, so were sorry to find out that he is a CGI construct.
