Plot of Rust: It is 1882 in the American mid-west. Lucas Hollister, a thirteen year old boy looks after his younger brother and their small holding after the death of their parents. On a visit to town they have an altercation with a local boy and his father, and later when Lucas is attempting to kill a wolf, he accidentally shoots the father dead. This results in his arrest and sentence to death. He is rescued by the notorious outlaw Harland Rust, who is his grandfather and the two go on the run towards Mexico, chased by a US marshal with a posse, and a bounty hunter, Fenton Lang, attracted by the $1000 price on their heads. The two are at odds to start with but reconcile as time passes, but will they succeed in their escape plan as they leave an easy to follow trail?
Content: There is no nudity, but one sexual event. A lot of drinking in a variety of environments. Lucas struggles with his responsibilities but successfully negotiates the sale of two pigs and a horse to allow the siblings to survive. One or two hangings take place to show us what fate awaits Lucas who spends time in the cells of the sheriff’s office. Once Rust breaks him out they go on the run in a bleak environment, occasionally coming across other settlers. When they are recognised Rust inevitably has to kill those who would hand them in to claim the reward. There is a contact with a Kiowa raiding party, where Lucas swaps a rifle for a horse. Finally, everyone meets in a gully where the final shoot-out must take place.
A View: This film is most famous for the unfortunate shooting accident which killed the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, for which the armourer served time for manslaughter. However, it was finished and distributed, and is not bad. It seems to have made a bit of money against a very moderate budget, a bit of a surprise considering the large number of actors involved. There is actually an interesting concentration on the detail of the weapons used, not always evident in westerns. It starts well but actually seems to lose focus a bit as time passes, which might be understandable. A film you might have on while doing something else.
Fun Fact: I usually check on the numbers of producers involved. This film holds my record of 108.
