Plot of Return to Silent Hill: This film is structured in many flashbacks, but here I will try to describe it sequentially. James Sunderland, driving a Mustang almost runs down a young woman who is waiting for a bus. This results in her missing the bus, but he volunteers to take her back into the town, and they become an item in a sunny version of Silent Hill. However, when James sees Mary, the young woman, being used in a ritual by her father who is apparently poisoning her, he leaves. Later he receives a letter from Mary asking to return to save her. Unable to resist he does but finds Silent Hill to be a grey ash covered place with almost no inhabitants. From this point there are what seem to be flashes sideways. In the town James searches for Mary who is supposed to be in the hospital and is helped by Maria. But the town is full of monsters, armless female torsos which spew out caustic fluid, a large man with a triangular headpiece for a head, small grotesque humanoid insects, and more. How will it work out?
Content: No sex or nudity, although the spider woman is obviously a naked female, but with multiple arms and a detachable head. There are various aspects to James’s story. He seems to be having therapy and talks to his therapist on the phone. In Silent Hill when he is particularly threatened by the monsters he reappears in the present and there is a gradually revealed story that he suffocated Mary at her request to end her torment. There are versions of Mary in the town who help him one of them, Maria, is killed by pyramid head man, bloodily. The monsters are very unpleasant, the gaggle of deformed nurses particularly horrible. This film could be frightening for young children.
A View: It probably requires an awareness of the other films, or the computer game to get anything out of this film since it really makes no sense. It is as if they have formed the monsters out of thin air without bothering to anchor them in a plot. Even the siren going off, in other presentations a sign of danger, or the removal of danger, changes nothing. The critics did not like it much, and neither did I, so if you choose to see it you know what you are in for.
Fun Fact: The film was made in Belgrade using 67 sets.
