A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

Plot of A Quiet Place: Day One: Samira, Sam, lives in a hospice with others on the edge of New York. One day they go to a puppet show in Manhattan and are trapped there by an alien invasion by creatures who destroy the environment and although they have no sight, have super tuned hearing and will eat any humans who make the slightest sound. They witness all the bridges around Manhattan being blown up.  Helicopters make announcements firstly that the creatures cannot swim and then that there are boats to rescue the people, hence crowds make their way south but their noise betrays them. Sam and a young Englishman, Eric and Sam’s cat, Frodo, manage to avoid the creatures although they have some close calls as they have to run and swim through abandoned metro tunnels. When they get to the river they see a boat out there, but also clusters of the creatures. What to do?

Content: No sex or nudity, the main character, a lady with terminal cancer, is seen to take pain killing drugs sometimes. In a wrecked New York Sam and Eric have occasional close calls with the creatures which seem to come in two sorts, without explanation. One sort are seen eating some sort of an egg. When people are eaten there is just noise and they disappear, indicating that the creatures move incredibly fast. There is tension, and moments of extreme tension one when an emergency generator starts up. Make any noise accidentally and you die – probably.

A View: This film has already made money, possibly because of the success of the first two films. We have to get past the initial view that surely, with modern technology and weapons, it must be possible to defeat unarmed unsighted aliens, no matter how good their hearing. I mean, in Dune the worms are attracted with a thumper. Attach a hand grenade we’d be cooking with gas. But that apart the film is Ok, even my wife said that it was better than she thought it would be, a reflection on my usual taste in movies.

Fun Fact: Lupita Nyong’o had an overwhelming fear of cats, but overcame it by having cat oriented therapy.
