Divergent (2014)

Duration 2h 19m Rating (UK) 12
Source of story A book of the same name by Veronica Roth
Writer/s Script Evan Daugherty, Vanessa Taylor
Director Neil Burger
Starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort
Elevator Pitch After an unspecified conflict the city of Chicago is fenced off from the countryside and is governed by “factions”, groups with different emotional attributes. Tris, the heroine, joins the Dauntless, but she is actually a “Divergent”, someone who does not fit into any faction, and she finds that there are those who would eliminate her and others like her.
Content Almost the whole film taken up with the Dauntless Boot Camp where the initiates learn all aspects of combat and the necessary mental approach. So there is a lot of fighting and daring exploits, and actually some bullying, particularly to the girls. Then a bit of intrigue and tension. No nudity, sex, or anything really of interest.
A View This was convoluted stuff, and I admit to actually looking at the Wikipedia description of the plot, during the presentation, to understand what was happening. Maybe it works if you are a teenage girl and have read the book, but otherwise give it a miss.
