Source of story
A book “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright (died 2003)
A rich LA gallery owner, whose husband is cheating on her, and who discarded her aspiring novelist first husband 20 years earlier, receives a proof of a manuscript from him and starts to read it. We follow the story within a story as a family travelling throught the night are driven off the road and attacked by a trio of yahoos. Could it be an allegory of their life?
Some nudity of an unusual sort in the title sequence. A lot of close ups of Susan reading the manuscript, and the progress of the story within a story which is unpleasantly violent and full of tension. Some flashbacks to Susan and Edward in youth as their marriage is derailed.
At the time of the viewing this seems like a workmanlike and artistic movie, and as such had received a lot of positive reviews. I have also read some reviews of the book and it is evident that a lot has been changed. For instance the location of the story within a story has been relocated from New England to Texas, and what happened to CSI West Texas anyway? Can’t say more!
