Real events, recorded by Alan Bennet as a book and a play
Shortly after Alan Bennet moves into a substantial house in Camden he almost accidentally comes to the aid of an oldish lady who lives in a van on the street. He allows her to park in his driveway for three months, and she stays for 15 years.
Lots of entertaining Bennetesque dialogue, and although Miss Shepherd always looks extremely grubby one is only put off by the discussion about, and views of, shit.
A really delightful film because, as always Alan Bennet writes clever witty scripts, and Maggie Smith does a wonderful job. The critics really liked it but the general audience were not quite so sure. Maybe you have to be English.
