Plot of Resident Evil: Bryan, a medical courier who, it is implied, often carries organs for transplants accepts the task of carrying an urgent package to Racoon City General Hospital, through a snowy landscape. He is discussing his girlfriend’s recent pregnancy with her on the telephone when a woman walks into the way of his car and he runs her down. Recovering her she seems strangely animate, and when a policeman takes her in his car it soon crashes, and Bryan finds himself having to learn to shoot as the corpse of the policeman and the woman combine into an odd creature. He car fails and he walks to a farm where he is attacked by a dog which morphs into a horrifying creature. Bryan struggles onwards and is picked up by Maxine and Paul, Umbrella Company employees, after Maxine drives off the creature with gunfire. They drive on towards the hospital but once in the city come under attack. Bryan discovers two things, he is carrying a cure for ‘the evil’ and the horror is not over.
Content: No sex or nudity or drinking, smoking or drug taking. Bryan drives on narrow icy roads, then once his car has failed due to gunshots carries on, on foot but still carries the urgent package. At the farmhouse he finds a shot gun and later some shells. This apparently directly lifted from Resident Evil video games. As time passes he is armed with other weapons but is not a good shot. He is attacked by a whole variety of creatures and never seems to come across another real person apart from Maxine and Paul, who are both killed. In an RV he comes across a girl who is partially creaturized and kills her with the shotgun. In a street of Racoon City people throw themselves from rooftops like bombs in order to kill him. He often comes across barriers locked with padlocks and fails to shoot them open. He gets instructions to climb to the top of the hospital, and takes the elevator – a mistake. He has also been bitten and sees his arm changing.
A View: This film made a lot of money during its opening weekend, and despite its big budget is probably into profit. In the same screen as my wife and I attended there were a number of teenagers who seemed to be commenting favourably about the film throughout the screening. And reading about the film apparently the script contains a lot of references to the video games, which doubtless pleases the players. If I am honest, I am not keen on the creatures which are people fused together, and since I am not a video game player the film had difficulty pleasing me, but on the plus side, Bryan is very likable. So, in short, if you play Resident Evil, you will like the film.
Fun fact: I think Bryan’s failure to shoot padlocks off is a joke and apparently there were a lot more, which the director cut out.
