Elevator Pitch: Marc Jarvis and Naomi are on/off lovers, but when Marc is diagnosed with a brain tumour which will kill him in a year Naomi determines to spend the time with him. She is frustrated when he decides not to wait, but to kill himself and have is body cryogenically preserved for a time when his problem can be solved. And sure enough in 2084 he opens his eyes to find that he is the first person to be brought back to life in what those who have carried out the work consider to be a ground breaking achievement. But is his limited life worth living. despite the fact that his attractive carer, Elizabeth, has promised to have sex with him, once he is strong enough.
Content: There is quite a lot of sex but no revelatory nudity. In order to move the plot forward there is a lot of voice over. We see much of Marc’s life mainly in flashback once he is conscious in the future. He spends most of his time on a bed floating on nothing gradually becoming more animate, but even getting together with Elizabeth does not work for him. He only gets to look out of the window once seeing people running on a path between palm trees. He destroys his connection to the machine when agitated. Quite unpleasant. There is a vault with hundreds of cryogenic frozen bodies in containers. Things don’t look great for them.
A View. Most of the critics quite liked this, but those who didn’t thought it weighty and a bit boring. In essence we don’t really care a lot about Marc, whether in the future or the present so his lack of enthusiasm for his reanimation is of little consequence, and one of the themes is a device which projects his memories so that others can look at them. I felt that they would be bored out of their brains once they had got past the sexy bits. So even though I liked the technology, probably a film you could have on while doing something else.
Additional Info: The limited on line information is uncertain about Marc’s illness, and there are only four IMDb trivia items. It just shows that no-one really cares.
