Elevator Pitch: Samuel Mullins is a dollmaker and while he is constructing a particularly large, and slightly creepy doll his seven year old daughter in killed in a car accident. He and his wife attempt to get in touch with the spirit of their daughter, but bad things happen. 12 years later Samuel makes a home for half a dozen orphans with their carer, a nun. But by now his wife is a recluse and the daughter’s bedroom door is locked. He cautions no-one to enter. Despite the caution Janice, a young girl crippled by polio, is enticed by messages to enter the bedroom, and then the closet where she finds the doll. She is attacked and attempts to escape before being hurled to the ground floor, and Samuel inexplicably dies before the truth is revealed to the nun by his wife. But will anyone survive.
Content: No nudity, sex, drinking or drugs. I don’t often say this but parents should be cautious before allowing children to view it due to the fact that many of the most frightening scenes involve young girls, and we never quite see the demon but we know it is there, taking possession of one and as a result terrifying the others. The doll is never seen to move which makes it even more creepy. There is one particularly frightening flashback where we find out what happened to Mrs Mullins.
A View: We have seen all three Annabelle films and have found them satisfactorily scary, although this one goes a bit mad in the third act. It has been generally well thought of by the critics as were the others, and it made a lot of money. Its estimated budget was $15 million and it grossed $306 million worldwide. So although one critic called it a “mishmash of cliches and nonsense” it is probably worth the cost of a download if you like that sort of thing.
Additiona Info: Although this is part of “The Conjouring” universe the Warrens are not in it.
