Superman 6: Man of Steel (2013)

Elevator Pitch

As Krypton is about to be destroyed Jor-El, its chief scientist dispatches his baby son in a spacecraft to Earth. The boy grows up in small town America managing to conceal his superpowers despite the fact that he is saving people from various disasters. He finds and recovers a Krypton spacecraft from the Arctic and establishes a relationship with an avatar of his father, but a reporter from the Daily Planet is on the case and is tracking him, interviewing those who he as rescued, and the villanous General Zog, the former military leader from Krypton is threatening the world. Can Kal-El, superman, remain anonymous and save humanity?

Content

Lots of exposition on Krypton as General Zog and superman’s dad face up to each other, many scenes of the young man on earth with his step-family and carrying out a number of rescues of people in trouble. Lois Lane gets on the case, and more than once comes face to face with the man who will be superman. General Zog arrives, with his various spacecraft and henchpeople, threatening the population, and causing military intervention which is not successful. Superman, suitably robed takes on the villain and, over a lengthy third act, fights him in the country and the city, causing a lot of collateral damage. No nudity, drug taking, drinking or sex, but just a bit of snogging.

A View I wondered a bit about the director’s palette being similar to that used by Michael Bey in Transformers, and of course it is because of the need for 3D effects. Other than that, this outing was moderately well liked by the critics, despite it being a bit earnest. I particularly liked the Pre-Raphealite costumes and spacecraft and thought the relationship between Lois Lane and Kal-El worked (just for once), but feel that the film would have benefited from a 20minute cut, mostly of the superbeings hand-to-hand combat.
Duration 2h 23m Rating (UK) 12A
Source of story The whole DC Comics superman franchise including a number of themes from the the early publications.
Director Zack Snyder
Writers/Script David S. Goyer, Christopher Nolan (Also both created the story). Superman a creation of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Additional Info I made this SM No 6, but in addition to the full length films there have been a number of shorts and TV series, so others may disgree. There have also been failed projects and some other outings in which Superman is a character.
