Tully (2018)

Elevator Pitch

Marlo, a mother with two children, one of them “quirky”, has just given birth to a third and is finding life difficult, so welcomes help from her rich brother, who suggests that she will benefit from the services of a “night nanny”; Tully, the nanny, arrives after dark, and magically Marlo’s life is transformed, the young woman providing help, advice and support, even engaging in a threesome with the husband, but surely things can’t be quite as good as they seem.

The mother struggles through the advanced stages of pregnancy, the birth, and the process of breast feeding while the husband plays computer games in bed?? The boy screams a lot and his school is visited, more than once. When the nanny arrives there is peace as she takes over. There is a bit of drinking, no smoking and one implied sex event. And also one car crash into a river, just a bit unsettling.

Duration 1h 35m Rating (UK) 15
Source of story An original screenplay
Director Jason Reitman
Writers/Script Diablo Cody
Starring Mackenzie Davis, Charlize Theron, Mark Duplass, Ron Livingston
A View Charlize Theron does wonderfully well, cast against type and she has some fun lines, after all this film is billed as a comedy, but I wonder if the massive effort she made to put on all the weight and then take it off, was really worth it.  You would have to give it a shot to decide for yourself. A possible clue is that the boy’s problem is left to us to diagnose. It is more than quirky. In the end I would probably have preferred to watch something else.
Additional Info The river into which the car is driven seems to be about fifty feet deep, but aren’t they all. Even the sea at Chappaquiddick was only just a bit deeper than Ted Kennedy’s car.
