Elevator Pitch |
Tonya Harding is a world class figure skater whose background and rebellious approach puts her constantly at odds with the judges. In order to appear more family friendly she resumes her relationship with the abusive husband she has divorced, and in turn he and a delusional friend, who claims to be her bodyguard, arrange for an attack on her main rival in the 1994 Olympics. |
Content |
This is a film made in documentary style with much speaking to camera interspaced with scenes from the skater’s childhood and early adulthood. Her mother is unpleasant and foul-mouthed, her husband beats her up, she skates a lot. In real life she claims to have known nothing about the attack; with the evidence provided we are left to decide. |
A View |
We seem to live in an age of foul mouthed middle aged women – in this film the mother – and the approach is fun, but there are some harrowing scenes as well. The sound track is fantastic and so I would recommend a visit to the cinema to see, and hear, it. ZZ Top, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits and others presented on a sound system better than they could have imagined back in the 80s. |
