Additional Info |
Walter Donohue was story editor. All the actors were paid equally for their work, information used to promote equal pay for women in the film industry. I noticed that the appearance of one fox required four “fox wranglers”. |
Director |
Sally Potter |
Starring |
Timothy Spall, Kristin Scott Thomas, Patricia Clarkson, Bruno Ganz, Cherry Jones, Emily Mortimer, Cillian Murphy |
Elevator Pitch |
A female politician is promoted to the post of shadow health minister and so is holding a celebration party. Her husband appears to be more or less comatose, except when he needs to change the music. Her friends turn up and interact, proving to be not a bit likeable, and secrets are revealed. The purpose of the gathering is forgotten. |
Content |
The action takes place, more or less in real time, in the kitchen, the living room, the bathroom and the patio of the shadow minister’s house. All the relationships between the partners and the friends change over the duration of the film. There is discussion and argument, and bit of drinking and some drug taking. |
A View |
This movie has been much admired but it could be that the writer/director’s previous work has influenced the critics. I felt that the emotions prompted by the various revelations were unrealistic. Just to identify one – there is a lesbian couple, the younger of the two is prompted to say she will leave her partner, because she (the partner) had had casual heterosexual sex forty years ago! |
