Awakenings

Released 1990 Rating 12 in UK
Director Penny Marshall Writer/s Steven Zaillian
Starring Robin Williams, Robert de Nero, Julie Kavner, Max von Sydow,
Source of story Book by Oliver Sachs
Elevator Pitch A group of people in a nut house, apparently suffering from a type of sleeping sickness, encephalitis, and having been unresponsive for many years, are administered to by a new doctor who gradually, by the use of drugs, wakes them up. His main subject appears to return to a normal life, but then things start to go wrong.
Content The drama is in the interaction between the health care workers and those to whom they are ministering.
A View A worthwhile, if slighty earnest tale, with little humour. De Nero does well as the recovered, and then deteriorating patient.
