Plot of Bride Hard: You can see from the title the intent of the film. Samantha, Sam, sets up and attends the ‘bachelorette’ party for her friend Betsy in Paris, but has to leave to carry out a secret assignment causing Betsy to replace her as maid of honour with Virginia. The wedding is to take place at Virginia and the groom, Ryan’s island home and Sam is sent there for a lone assignment. During the wedding ceremony the guests are taken hostage by mercenaries whose objective is the secret vault of the family, which apparently contains gold and a hard drive which will prove the innocence of the father of Chris, one of the guests, and now one of the villains. But during the take over, Sam has avoided capture and gradually overcomes the villains one by one until captured herself. Will the wedding group pull themselves together and rescue her?
Content: No sex or nudity although a trio of male strippers ‘dry hump’ (her words) the bride at the bachelorette party. Actually quite unpleasant. No smoking or drug taking, but quite a bit of drinking, and apparently drunk young women. Quite a few sexual jokes, I think, which would be understood by Americans. Sam generally wins hand to hand conflicts, using whatever is available in a sort of Jason Statham style. Ryan, the groom is shot in the leg, but seems to recover OK. Once we get to the wedding on the expensive island, the progress of events gets more and more unlikely, ending up with a hovercraft towing two skips full of gold!
A View: As usual where there is an attempt to spoof James Bond, mostly already a spoof it all goes to hell. In this outing we start from a very unlikely event gradually getting to the point where we cannot suspend disbelief any more. It needed to be cleverer if it was to succeed in entertaining us. By the end of the film everyone has ended up at a train depot. Why? Particularly since the wedding was taking place on an island. So if you fancy a comedy action film choose something else.
Fun Fact: The film has forty producers. Is this a record?
