Summary: Dr Michael Morbius is a genius doctor, who has turned down a Nobel prize for his invention of artificial blood. He suffers from a killer disease to do with blood deficiency, but is pursuing a cure using vampire bat DNA. The process is being financed by his friend and fellow sufferer, Milo. When it seems likely that he has succeeded, he hires a cargo ship to carry out an experiment on himself, helped by his assistant Dr Martine Bancroft. When the new serum takes him over he becomes a super person, with extreme strength and the ability to move faster than the eye can see, but also with an overpowering desire to drink the blood of fellow humans, and he immediately kills the eight mercenaries who are in the ship. He jumps into the sea, leaving the ship for the FBI to scratch their heads over, and in time learns to control his bat impulses. However, his friend Milo, injects himself with the serum, becoming a killer bat person. What is Mobius going to do about his friend?
Content: No sex or nudity, or drug taking apart from the bat cure. The opening scene is of a helicopter landing outside a bat cave, probably in South America, where Morbius captures his bats. Thereafter in his laboratory there is a glass cylinder in which bats are constantly fluttering. On the ship Morbius becomes batlike and kills the mercenaries who are hunting him. At one time he is captured and imprisoned but when Milo, his friend, visits him in prison Morbius realises that he is also a bat person, and it seems, he has no compunction in killing people. At times the two fight zooming about in New York, faster than the eye can follow.
A View: I wonder why scriptwriters can never find a way of providing ships with crews. Even after eight mercenaries were killed there should have been people left. This film was dissed by everybody, and was nominated in most categories of the Razzies. It won two, worst actor and worst supporting actor. I honestly did not think it was that bad. It had a plot, it rolled along and I thought that the special effects were pretty good. We might wonder why bat blood would give humans super powers, but that’s a can of worms anyway. I did notice that it is quite an expensive download though, so wait till it is free before viewing.
I have reviewed a lot of superhero films, but would not actually recommend many of them. I liked Guardians of the Galaxy Vol III, Shazam, Lucy and Kick-Ass..
