Child’s Play 3 (1991)

Plot of Child’s Play 3: Andy Barclay who had a hand in the disposal of the evil doll Chucky eight years earlier is now aged 16 and is a student in a military academy. Elsewhere the Play Pals company thinks they have got over the Chucky disaster and reintroduce the Good Guy dolls. However, the evil spirit has survived the melting down of the plastic which had been the doll and it re-inhabits a new one. The first thing the doll does is kill the CEO of the company, then manages to get itself posted to the military school where Andy is a pupil, adopting a young cadet Ronald Tyler. There after Andy knows what is happening but is unable to convince anyone that the doll is the reason why people keep dying and the superintendent of the school dies of a heart attack, a garbage man in squashed in his own truck and the sergeant who cuts the student’s hair has his throat cut. Finally, out in the woods during the annual combat exercise, things come to a head.

Content: No sex or nudity or drinking. The CEO smokes cigars and maybe the superintendent of the school does. Andy and his friends have to deal with the brutal and obnoxious cadet officers who always give them a hard time. The doll influences the young boy Tyler who is always on the verge of being possessed by the spirit in the doll. Andy becomes friendly with one of the two female cadets, Kristin.

A View: The critics did not like this much although one said ‘Chucky himself is an animatronic delight’, and it certainly manages to look evil when required to do so. But if I described this film as ‘tiresome’ I would be crediting it with more content and style than it actually has. I wondered how the CEO had been presented with the one specific doll which was inhabited, but that was nothing compared with the means by which it had been posted to the military school. So honestly, not a watch unless you are collecting the set.

Fun Fact: The next film ‘Bride of Chucky’ which was made in 1998 is set only nine months after the events of this film.
