Plot of Wuthering Heights: Wuthering Heights, if you did not know, is the name of the Earnshaw family home. In 1771 Mr Earnshaw, a drunk and gambler, brings home a boy he has adopted in Liverpool and Cathy, his teenage daughter names him Heathcliff after her dead brother. The two grow up together and have feelings for each other, but in young adulthood Heathcliff rides away and Cathy gains the attention of the rich Edgar Linton who woos and marries her. Also in this environment is Nelly, Cathy’s companion and Isabella, Edgar’s ward. Five years later Heathcliff returns, now rich and well groomed. He buys Wuthering Heights and pursues Cathy again They become lovers out of sight of Edgar, who eventually bans Cathy from seeing him. The latter marries Isabella while all the time telling her how badly he intends to treat her, and does, chaining her up like a dog. He also has Isabella write love letters for him to Cathy, but Nelly burns them, so their relationship is unresolved.

Content: This is a film which is mainly about sex. When a man is hanged the ladies in the throng are excited to perceive his erection. Later Cathy sees servants Joseph and Zillah having bondage type sex, and afterwards retreats to the moors to masturbate and once Heathcliff returns he and Cathy have many sexual encounters secretly. Heathcliff and Isabella engage in a sadistic relationship. All of this sex is carried out fully clothed or at most with the lady’s shoulders exposed, after all it is pretty cold up there on the moors. Mr Earnshaw is a drunk and is seen amid piles of bottles. The moors are misty and craggy. The Linton house is amazingly luxurious and the Earnshaw house cold and gloomy.

A View: The critics divided about this outing. I kept having logistics problems. The Linton house was more suited to a Mediterranean environment. The garden is full of flowers yet somewhere close the moors are cold and misty. The rooms are also vast so there is no possibility of the fires warming them at all. If you are old and have lived in the north of England, you might have experienced a home without any form of central heating, in one everyone sits as close to the fire as possible, but not in the Linton house. The screen my wife and I attended was full of people, so the film is popular in Madrid. Even so I think it will be hard pressed to make money.

Fun Fact: On her way to fame the director spent some years as a participant in Call the Midwife.
