Plot of Dreamcatcher: Four young boys rescue a slightly disabled boy from ullies, and are given telepathic powers as a result. We see them in adulthood using these powers to achieve results which mystify the recipients. The guys meet every year in a cabin in the woods (not that cabin) to renew their friendship and on this year things go wrong. They rescue a guy who had gastric problems who to their horror defecates an alien being like a sausage with teeth. Meanwhile a secret organisation is searching for aliens and has created a no go area, imprisoning the people they find within it. Two of the guys in their truck overturn in the snow, avoiding a woman sitting in the road who we know is also infected. The secret military search for the alien space craft and find it, but it blows up killing some of them. One of the guys, Jonesy, has his body inhabited by an alien adult and with one of the others starts off on a snowmobile to get to civilisation. Henry, who is a doctor, is captured by the secret military, but manages to persuade the second in command onto his side, to prevent mass killings. But things are coming to a head.
Content: No sex or nudity. Quite a bit of beer drinking since it seems that Pete, one of the guys, is an alcoholic. The content of this film really consists of virtually independent scenes which have little relationship with each other. The guys are seen doing strange things, typically one of them finds a woman’s car keys which she has dropped in a puddle. We see them in youth gaining their special powers but why? They meet in the cabin. The scene of the man defecating the worm is graphic and distressing. There is a lot of blood. Pete the alcoholic is bitten on the penis by a worm, but seems to survive. Jonesy seems to have a special relationship with his memories, since we see him in a massive storage area trucking them around. The aliens are about ten feet tall, sort of amorphous and sometimes toothy.
A View: This film only just covered its considerable production cost, and was disliked by nearly everybody except for Stephen King who thought it was pretty good. You could almost see how the plot had developed. Later when there are aliens about it was necessary for the guys to be aware when Jonesy had been taken over, so this necessitates the telepathic capability, so we go back to the beginning to find out how they gained the capability. But honestly, what was the point. I always give low marks to films which are really pointless, or which start well but deteriorate into rubbish. This film ticked both boxes, so not a watch even for nothing.
Fun Fact: Stephen King sold the movie rights for one dollar.
