Copshop (2021)

Plot of Copshop: Teddy Murretto, a con man who has information which makes him a target for both crooked FBI people and the mafia gets himself jailed in a remote police station in Nevada, the arresting officer Valerie Young, a smart rookie police officer mildly obsessed with firearms. He hopes to remain safe in the station’s cells but Bob Viddick, a hitman, pretends to be a drunk driver and also gets himself jailed in the cell opposite Teddy. Valerie looks Bob up in the files and finds that he has been arrested and let go many times. Bob has a smoke bomb left in reception which goes off and allows him to attack the sergeant, pinch a hand gun and shoot at Teddy but misses. Valerie restores order, now handcuffing Bob in his cell. Meanwhile crooked cop Huber bags drugs from the evidence room. Just when things seem to be under control another hitman Anthony Lamb arrives and kills almost all the policemen except for Valerie who escapes into the cell block rewriting the entry code so, keeping Lamb and the renegade Huber out. Unfortunately, she has shot herself with a ricochet and is getting weaker. When Huber and Lamb start to break down one of the walls to the cell block she must get help from one of the villains, but which one?

Content: There is no sex or nudity, or drinking or drug taking although drugs do feature in the evidence locker. Initially there is a car chase and Teddy is tazered outside a restaurant where a wedding is breaking up. Valerie fools with her colt 45 a bit, competing in a quick draw with another young cop. In the cells Bob and Teddy trade insults. Out in the police station where the sergeant’s office is on a sort of balcony above the space where the policemen work, the sergeant shouts at his guys a bit. Bob injures a guy in the cell with him, resulting in Valerie having to do an emergency tracheostomy. Despite her youth she subdues Bob and is quick enough to get into the bullet proof cell block while Anthony Lamb kills the rest of the policemen. There is tension in the final shoot out.

A View: This film ended up being quite expensive due to the presence of Gerard Butler, but did not make any money. I don’t know what the problem was, how could you not watch a film directed by Joe Carnahan and featuring Frank Grillo and Gerard Butler? But even they are eclipsed by the wonderfully cool Alexis Louder. It is a small scale movie but it makes the best of its location as do the actors. If you enjoy shoot’em ups give this outing a go.

Fun Fact: For you guys in America ‘Copshop’ is old fashioned slang for the police station in UK.
