Plot of Sinners: Two black Chicago gangster twin, Smoke and Stack, return to their roots in Clarksdale Mississippi with the intention of opening a night club. The buy a former sawmill from a KKK man, Hogwood using money from their former life, and then they travel about getting the band together, and advertising their intent to open the club that very night. They recruit musicians, cooks, food suppliers and a bouncer from their former acquaintances and set things up. Meanwhile two share-croppers accidentally invite a vampire into their home and become vampires themselves. The evening gets going but is interrupted when the vampires approach wanting to come in and join in the music making. But despite their persuasions the guys are suspicious and since vampires have to be invited in they remain outside. However, gradually people are turned into vampires and it seems likely that in time everyone will be turned. And if that was not enough there is still the KKK.
Content: There is sex and talk about sex, but no nudity. A lot of drinking and smoking, probably including pot but not much made of it. There are the more or less standard vampire rules. They must be invited in. When a vampire drinks the blood of a human, the human is turned into a vampire in a few minutes. Vampires retain the personalities of their human hosts but have a collective consciousness and they can fly a bit. And they tell people it is much better to be a vampire. There is a lot of music, blues which the black musicians play and Irish folk music which the vampires play, due to the first vampire being Irish. All of it is fantastic. The vampire attacks are very gory and the set-up for them is extremely tense, and there is a shoot out with the KKK.
A View: I though this film was extraordinarily derivative. The twins were very like the twin assassins in ‘Breaking Bad’, there was a lot of ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’, Quentin Tarantino’s first script and just a bit of ‘The Thing’, in this film requiring the survivors to eat garlic to prove they are not vampires. But no matter, it is a terrific film, and I thought that the music was wonderful right up to the closing moments, so probably worth a visit to the multiplex near you so that you can hear it on their superior sound system.
Fun Fact: In the film the Chinese store keepers have a shop on one side of the street for the black people and one on the other side for the whites, reflecting how things really were back in those days.
