God is a Bullet (2023)

Plot of God is a Bullet: Bob Hightower is desk bound policeman who is divorced and talks to his daughter while she looks out at his squad car from her window. But his world changes when the family are attacked by a satanic cult who kill the parents and abduct the daughter. Bob goes to interview the only known survivor from the cult, a woman known as ‘Case”. She tells him that his daughter may be alive and agrees to help him find her as long as he discards his police persona, gets tattooed and becomes part of the underworld. He does what is required of him and the two go on a hunt to find the cult and rescue his daughter, if she is still alive. They are able to trace and recover a drug cache destined for the cult and also are able to grab $100, 000 intended to pay for it. This they think will give them some leverage in the plan to recover the daughter. But Cyrus, the cult leader, is a mad bastard so who knows.

 Content: There are rapes, although no nudity, some drinking and a but of weed smoking. But mainly there is extreme violence with beatings stabbings and shootings involving the maximum amount of blood and gore. Case has been a member of the cult and we see her abducted as a child  while waiting outside a store for her mother. There are a lot of tattooed people and  Bob gets tattooed extensively. Case is also tattooed a lot. There seems to be a deal of cat and mouse interaction between the cult and Bob, and there is a subplot involving the sergeant the sergeant’s wife and a friend (cut out of the 2 hour version).

A View: I had never heard of this film, despite its quite starry cast, but might have been attracted to it by the presence of Maika Monroe, who was the FBI agent in Longlegs. The critics did not like it, one or two suggesting that if it had been compressed into an hour and thirty minutes it would have been fine. I don’t know how much it cost but its delayed and limited release indicates that it was a bomb. It was grim and bloody, so not really a watch even for nothing.

Fun Fact: The author of the book took the title from a saying written on the wall of a bar in Thailand.
