The Detonator (2006)

The Plot of The Detonator: Sonni Griffith is an undercover CIA agent based in Bucharest who is given the task of protecting a young woman who is holding knowledge about the location of an enormous sum of money which a mafia chief in the city needs to purchase a nuclear weapon with which he intends to hold the world to ransom. The villain is also involved in the promotion of a football team in the city. Sonni and the woman, Nadia, escape to a CIA safe house but find that the location is invaded by a group of black clad men so it is obvious that their presence has been leaked by someone in the CIA office in the city. With nowhere to go to be safe the two go on the  run. Meanwhile the villain gets closer to the purchase of the nuclear bomb and for Sonni and Nadia the CIA mole must be discovered for them to survive, and the purchase of the bomb prevented.

Content: No sex or nudity. Was there a bit of drinking, maybe but no drunkenness. No young men in films ever do anything else but open the fridge and take out a beer. There are a number of shoot ups, Sonni always winning the day and I seem to recollect a car chase which went fairly well. There are photos of how this was achieved on IMDb. The mafia boss is even and shows how bad he is when in charge of his football team.

A View: I though this film was saved by Silvia Colloca, who sparkled a bit, but it does not seem to have been everybody’s view. One of the two reviewers found it to be ‘one of the most inept and shockingly dull action flicks to hit the scene’. Others have said it was Wesley Snipes’s worst film. That is a pretty low bar to duck under. Action films have continued to be difficult for those making them since every possible permutation of car chase, and fire fight has been done. On the plus side they are mostly not too long and you don’t have to pay attention. So not really a watch, even for nothing.

Fun Fact: The film makers took the cheap option of both setting the action Bucharest and actually filming it there.
