Skyscraper (2018)

Plot of Skyscraper: On the waterside in Hong Kong a very very tall skyscraper has been built, and security consultant Will Sawyer, a former FBI man, has been employed to assess the building’s security. At the top of the building is the owner’s suite where Zhao Long Ji, the owner can be found and on the 96th floor is an apartment containing Sawyer’s wife and two children. In order to get to the owner some villains set fire to floor 96, and manage to disable fire fighting systems, using Sawyer’s special tablet. This makes Sawyer a wanted man, so he must evade the security services as well as somehow getting into the building above the fire. Watched by crowds on the ground he climbs a crane and manages to jump from the end of the jib into the building. From then on he is faced with the problem of evading the villains and rescuing his family from the increasingly hazardous situation. In the end, at a stand off between him and the head villain who has captured one of his children, he is faced with a task which will tax him to the limit of his capabilities.

Content: No sex or nudity, maybe just a bit of social drinking. Sawyer is involved in a rescue effort which results in him losing the lower part of one leg, resulting in him taking up this civilian role. He shown round the skyscraper. It is wild, with many floors occupied by a tropical garden and the boss’s secure apartment. There are a number of traitors about, including Sawyer’s former colleague and a Brit working for Zhao. As well as the villains in the tower a second group led by an evil young woman take over the tower’s security centre. There is a lot of gunfire. Sawyer has to climb a tower crane and jump a gap into the skyscraper. He also has to climb around the outside of the building, witnessed by the crowd on the ground.

A View: The poster says it all! Even before much of the film has passed we can see how it is going, and even if the entertainment is not whether Will Sawyer and his family will survive, but how they will survive, it all gets a bit tedious by the end. It might have made a bit of money, depending on how much was put into the publicity. Unfortunately it is not even as good as either of the most recent Dwayne Johnson disaster films. So something to have on while you do something else.

Fun Fact: Neve Campbell is the original Scream queen, from the first in 1996 to the seventh due out in 2026.
