Plot of Monsters – Dark Continent: A group of soldiers from Detroit are sent to the Middle East where they are sent out on a mission and end up in a farm house where the owner is interrogated, and some monsters are sort of drifting about. The soldiers fire their weapons at one and it falls onto the sand.  Later they are sent on a mission to recover five soldiers who are trapped in a remote area. To do this they must travel on a desert road in Humvees, but are blown up. One of their number steps on another IED and has his legs blown off. They are forced to fight their way out, exchanging shots with a group of rebels and three of them, the survivors, are captured and tied up. Later, with only two of them alive the insurgents are distracted by a monster and run away, allowing the sergeant and one private to escape. The sergeant, Frater, insists that the mission can be completed, so they steal two motor cycles and ride into the desert. What awaits them?

Content: There is some brief nudity and sex, and the young men take some drugs and drink some beer while having a last wild night before being drafted to the theatre of war. They visit a place where a fight between a dog and a small monster is taking place. The dog is killed and the monster shot. In the desert there are a lot of very large monsters wandering about making noises, and some horse like monsters running along in the desert. When the Humvees are blown up there is an extended fire fight and the group of soldiers are gradually killed off leaving in the end just two of them, moving across a washed out landscape. They find a school bus which has been blown up and rescue the one surviving child, as a result are befriended by some desert dwellers. One soldier has his legs blown off and some of the killings are graphic. The sergeant is a nutter.

A View: Surprisingly, despite the lack of interest in virtually all media areas, this film has probably made money. It was actually yet another film featuring soldiers battling against the odds in the Middle East. The fact that there were monsters hanging about made literally no difference to the plot, apart from one event where some terrorists were frightened by them. One wonders how many films can be made which mainly feature soldiers crouching behind piles of bricks exchanging shots with vast numbers of insurgents, who never stop, despite being constantly picked of by the Americans. But perhaps I’ve seen too many Jarhead sequels. So not a watch even for nothing unless you really like that sort of thing.

Fun Fact: Only two Trivia items on IMDb but 130 photos. I don’t know what this means.
