Plot of Fly Me to the Moon: In the 1960 the Russians seem to have the led in the space race, but the President decrees that the Americans will be first on the moon, with Apollo 11 being scheduled for the job. There have been problems including the deaths of three astronauts in a fire, and the fact that funding for the flight is in doubt. So, White House Fixer, Moe Bercus finds Kelly Jones, a super marketing guru. She takes charge of the PR for the flight coming up against Cole Davis the flight controller but undaunted she uses actors for press conferences. In addition Moe requires her to arrange for a simulation of the moon landing in a vast hanger space, just in case the real landing goes wrong. But as zero hour approaches Kelly is required to arrange for the simulation to replace the actual landing, just in case. Although she initially refuses, Moe threatens to reveal her somewhat murky past if she does not do it.
Content: No sex or nudity, just a bit of drinking and some smoking by some people. Kelly is seen being a whiz at marketing. Once in Florida at the launch site she argues a lot with Cole. Fortunately for them both there are a couple of youthful geniuses on the team who sort out a lot of problems. The astronauts go through the PR process gradually making it to the rocket. The simulation is developed until it is really going well, but there is a cat wandering about all the time. Some technology with the filming. Film of the rocket being taken to the launch site on top of that amazing tracked vehicle (real), and the rocket taking off. Impressive.
A View: It seems unlikely that this film will cover its costs, it’s a bit of a misfire in view of at least some of the critics. I couldn’t really see Channing Tatum as a comedy romantic involved with Johansson, and so it has proved. He is such a big guy, so he seems likely to punch somebody at some time. The supporting cast did well, but it is not quite worth the ticket price, so wait for it to come out on your cable channel and watch it while doing something else.
Fun Fact: While they were filming there was a real rocket launch, which they captured.
